The Brain Food Company, a subsidiary of Fakazamani Investments, supplies educational games and books and trains young children to read in English using the phonics method. Phonics is a method of teaching reading based on the sounds of letters, groups of letters and syllables. Many children are never given a proper foundation in phonics – the basis for success in reading – and as a result cannot decode unfamiliar words. Our product and programme teaches children how to "sound out" new words in a fun, interactive way.

Brain Food educational materials and games are 'language focused'. Language is critical to any learning process as it is through the understanding of language that people grow and learn – in any subject. Our programme has been endorsed by the Department of Education (DoE), the South African Qualifications Authority (SAQA) and speech therapists.
The programme consists of an adventure phonics game that is played by groups of children so that they learn to read in a fun interactive way. It has been piloted in a number of schools. At The Kings College, in Bryanston, Johannesburg, the principal, teachers and 12 Grade R children participated in a pilot programme. Within four weeks, after 20 hours with facilitators, all the children were able to read three- to four-letter words with no difficulty. Parents were amazed at the progress of their children and recommended the programme highly.
Our games are great resources for parents who want to help their kids sharpen their communication skills. Most parents agree that games and activities enhance personal learning and development.
Learning can be fun – and children should be encouraged to see it like this. Too often, children struggle to learn because they find the way things are presented boring and mundane. Our products changes the way learning happens and the enthusiasm of kids working through activities with facilitators demonstrates not only how learning can be fun but how much can be learnt in a short time with the right approach.
Each session will run for 30 minutes only once a week. Our Speech Therapist has advised us that kids tire easily and concentration lapses if sessions are too long.
The programme will only run in the school terms as it targets children in crèches and at school.

Reaching out
The Brain Food company is donating materials to selected crèches and children's homes. Free training will be provided to facilitators who want to teach the Adventure Phonics programme. Each crèche/home will be allowed to send as many facilitators as they want for this training, which will start in January 2012 before schools open. Children will also be given books to encourage reading and writing.
Facilitators will receive ongoing training as Brain Food also has more advanced materials and games for older children or those who have reached certain literacy levels.
In the first week of November 2011, we will be delivering Brain Food products and programmes to two crèches in Diepsloot, namely Genesis Crèche and Asakhane Crèche, and to Ethembeni Children's Home in Doornfontein and Kholofelo ya Josepha Community Care Centre in Alexandra Township.
